Melissa: Welcome to the brick and mortar visibility podcast. Hello, everybody happy, happy new year, we are in the midst of tying up the bow on 2021. And we are heading into 2022. If you have seen the Moira meme out there, y'all from Schitt's Creek where she is realizing 2022 is pronounced 2020 too. It's hysterical and you just have to laugh right. Welcome to the show for those of you that are new. My name is Melissa Rose. I am your host. I have a brick and mortar dance studio, as well as an online dance studio. And I help other brick and mortar businesses be the only option in town. So I'm so glad you're here. This is my favorite time of year. Not only are we doing all the things with family and friends and the tradition of the holidays, but this week, this week between Christmas and new year's is just kind of this like special time, because our schedules are a little bit out of whack right they're a little kitty Wampus, as I say, and the kids are home more you know, we're not eating. Like we normally eat. Our schedules are a little different. It's all good. Right? It's all good. But what I really like is taking this time to reflect on the past year and to look to what's ahead. that all starts with being super intentional.. And being mindful and reflective and just grounded. Right. So taking that time, it's so, so important to do. If you've been in business awhile, you know that you do this, even if you're not a business owner, maybe you. you have a side hustle and you listen in. Great. Awesome. So glad to have you, but all of us, we do this naturally, you know, it might be this time of year. It might be in September. That's another great time to do it. You know, when school is starting again and the routine is back in order, but just looking at where we are and where we want to move forward. It takes some time to do that. So if you would like to set aside some time, I have a workshop coming up tomorrow, December 30th at 11 o'clock. I call this create your epic life. I know I sound so dramatic, but you guys, I want you to wake up every day and say, OMG I get to do this. This is so fun. I can't believe this is about. And as you know, I'm a business owner, I'm also a mama of five kids. I also have a few friends and I really love my life. I really love my life. I'm so thankful for it. And there was a time you guys, when I did wake up and I dreaded my day, but that is not the case anymore. But it took intentional steps forward to do that. So I need to revisit this every year to go, where do I want to be at the end of next year? So come join me tomorrow. 11 o'clock is a free webinar and if anything, we'll hold you accountable to taking that time, to set yourself up for success. Okay. So I will walk through with you my process in how I do that in all areas of your life, because you're not just a business owner, you're not just a parent or a partner or a friend. You have all these layers in your life. And I want us to wake up and live her life every day. So come join me tomorrow. 11, o'clock go grab your seat at MsMelissarose.com/Epiclife.
Today's podcast. You guys is the 10 tips I use in goal setting and it was recorded last year. And that recording was based on a blog that I did years ago, probably five years ago. And the content is relevant for today. So to save my producer a bunch of times so that he could enjoy his holiday season with his family. I'm like, let's just reuse the content. It's still good. And it's still relevant. And I still do these practice. So take it, grab a notebook pen, sit with it and think about how you want to create that epic life. Listen to this podcast, join me tomorrow in the workshop. So you are set up for success. All right. Enjoy.
All right, everybody. So here we go. We are going into the top 10 things I do every year to set myself up for success for 2021 or the next year. Let's just be real. 2020 was hard and it was hard. So many ways. And yet for me personally, it was my best year. And that just shows that by taking little actions every day in the right direction, you can still do really well.
Did I hit all my goals? No, but I have hit a lot of them this year. And. Is just mind blowing to me and crazy and happy and exciting and all the good things. Because when you really look back and you go, okay, I'm still standing. I'm still standing like that song. I'm still standing. Oh, so here we go. Number one, I want you to get it all out on paper.
I want you to take an afternoon or a couple hours. Maybe the kids go sledding or everybody is napping or wherever you are in your stage of life. And you take a couple hours and just drink. And don't limit yourself to time. Don't limit yourself to finances. Don't limit yourself to the season of life you are in, just put it out on paper and write it out, grab a glass of wine or a beer in my case and just go, what would it be like if, or imagine if, and just put it out there and it doesn't matter how big or how small one year.
One of my goals was to get my nails done every month. And I was. That would be really awesome. If I could do that, I am where I can do that. And you know what? I don't want to do that. Find it really boring. It's really hard for me to sit there and take the time to do it. Not the time just sitting there, but there was a time a few years ago when I thought that would fuel me up.
And it doesn't as much anymore. I do like getting my nails done, but it's not a priority to get them done every month or every week, even though I could. So it's fun to see as you look back on your goals to, or what seemed important back then is not as important to you maybe now, but I do want you to take some time and just write it out.
Like what would be really cool? I have a piece of paper on my desk that I just continue to add to that list. What would it be like? What would be really cool or I would love to have this and some of those stay on my. And some of them get pushed to a later time or the parking lot, number two, what is on or off your table.
So this is different than getting it all out. But what is honor off your table? I have done this so many times and if I could wave a magic wand over what I do not want to do anymore, that's the way I phrase it. If I could just magically make it disappear, what do I not want to do anymore? And that is really helping.
Another way to rephrase this. James Wedmore says, if you could wave a magic wand and all the things you want to do are super successful, which one would you choose? I like that one as well. So both work. And what is really helpful, is it really just kinda narrows in, okay. No, this is truly what's important to me.
And really is a non-negotiable or a hard, yes, or a hard note that I have to do that. Number three, what is it all worth priceless? Right. But now we get to be more specific without going full on, into budgeting. What do you need to have in order to achieve the vacation or getting the nails done or getting your kids activities where they want to go, like thinking about all buckets of your life, what is the price of it?
And what does that mean? Be super clear about that, because that will play a factor into what is on the table or off the table. Some things for me are priceless. Like taking my kids, being able to take my kids, having the freedom to take my kids one-on-one and not outsource the driving to somebody. I personally don't mind the driving, especially if I just have one kid in the car at a time, because that is priceless time to have a conversation or just to sit in peace and listen to some music or whatever it is.
That is priceless. So I want to have the flexibility and the time to do those things. And that is a super on the table. What's that worth to me, exercise. Number four, look back to move forward. Remember that the rear view mirror is always smaller than the windshield that we need both to drive the car. So what worked well in 2020, all of us had to think creative.
In parenting in relationships in business, we had to be creative. And one thing that I am carrying forward into 2021, our virtual coffee dates. And when I say coffee dates, I mean, both personally and business, we used to at least here in the Midwest, we'll get together, we'll move and we'll have a coffee date and meet at a coffee shop.
And. Time just gets taken over. Maybe you get caught up in a conversation or whatever, and not to say that can't happen virtually, but there's so much time saved with a virtual coffee date. And I am taking that into my 20, 21, both personally and professionally. But what other things, maybe you marketed things different.
Maybe you sold things differently. Maybe you realized, oh, if I. This happens and you can learn from that. And there are things that we are not going to do in 2021. So look back to move forward. Number five, planet out. I'm sure you've heard the same plan, your work, then work your plan super easy. Right?
Getting it on the calendar can make a huge difference and really. Being consistent. I'm all about massive action. And I say, massive action. And you can get caught up in that in a way where I have to do this huge chunk of work every day. Let's say you want to lose 10 pounds or 20 pounds or a chunk of weight, and I'm going to drink this much water.
I'm going to eat this way. And I'm going to exercise an hour every day. And chances are after week two, three or four. It's not going to happen because you took on so much massive action. And what I mean by massive action is taking massive action every day. And sometimes we have to lower our standards and that's okay.
So if that means I drink this much water and I take a 30 minute walk every day, I'm going to do that. And I'm going to do that consistently. So that way. By month four, I have nailed that down. And now I've added strength training to the mix. So sometimes we have to lower our expectation of ourself so that we can be consistent in the long run.
Because as you all know, consistency is the name of the game. If you can be consistent. And your goals every day, taking that massive action. And when I say massive action, sometimes it feels like massive action. Cause sometimes that 30 minute walk is hard to get in and that is the massive action, but you're doing it consistently.
So. You get it, plan it out, plan it out so that you can do something every day towards that goal, working it backwards. Number six, what are you going to wear? Are you still with me? Ah, when I am feeling insecure, I put on a kick butt outfit. I dress up because guess what I show up to. Just like today, usually on my podcast, recording days, those are the days that I get my hair done and I do my makeup because I show up differently.
I never record in my bathroom and you know, not done up just because I show up differently. That can mean physically, but also emotionally and mentally. So where are you showing up? And you know what you need to do? You kind of mapped out your plan. You need to show up. So plan it out where you're showing.
I record my podcasts on certain days, because I know those are the days that I show up differently. I'm intentional about it. It sounds geeky. It sounds too, you know, cookie box boundary, but that is the way I work. And I found huge success in that. And when you are showing up. Mentally and emotionally and physically where you need to be in your business.
It makes all the difference. Number seven, accountability. Who do you need in your tribe to help you succeed, to hold you accountable? Who can you trust in these areas to encourage speak truth, pick you up or guide you? Is it a friend? Is it a colleague? Do you need to hire a coach? What is it for? I have my business bestie.
I have my mastermind. I have my group coaching and then I have a private coach, a private business coach. I have four things, four levels helping me hold me accountable to my goals. Now they can't hold me accountable. They can just encourage me and guide me. I have to do the work to make myself accountable to this, and I have to have deep skin in the game to make it work for me.
But I am. Communicating with them. So that way, once it's out, once it's there, it's going to happen for me. So who is holding your combo? Maybe you have a friend. Maybe you need to invest in that coaching program. Maybe you need to invest in that coach. Hey, there guys, I'm jumping in, in the middle of the podcast because we just talked about coaching and I thought, you know what?
This is the perfect time to talk to you about one on one coaching. The benefits of it. I have seen it in my business. I have had a coach now for four years and each year, my business has grown over 20% with this year being the biggest jump in girls. And I owe it all to having a coach, to lean into, to ask questions, to help me figure out the tough things and lean into their wisdom and lean into their network to help me grow my business.
And I want to share that with you. Well, one-on-one coaching program that is a six month commitment. And this is for that person. Who's not really a fan of working in groups, but really is at a point in their business where they kind of have some things figured out, maybe 1, 2, 3, 4 years in business, you've been doing this, you get it, but you're just needing the extra Oles to take you to the next level, whether it's marketing, maybe you're pivoting.
Maybe you want more brand awareness. Maybe you want help in your back office because you patchwork things together. Now for the. Here's a business and now it's messy and you need to figure out a system to help you save time and money. One-on-one coaching is a great way to do this with my program. Not only do you get me one-on-one to ask questions and all the things and my network and my systems, but you also get access to my level of group trainings that happen once a month.
And you get access to that. Whether you join us live or the recording of the video, but I just want to encourage you if you are that person, if you are a solopreneur or somebody with a really small team, Just wanting to get more time, freedom and financial freedom in your business and thinking I'm working too hard to be this stressed out one-on-one coaching might be for you.
So check it out on my website. Miserableness rose.com and click work with me and click the one-on-one coaching and we more see more direct message me or apply. I'd love to be your coach. All right. Number eight, let's do this. Okay. So you can think you can plan. You can nationalize all you want, but that won't happen unless you move.
So you got to take the steps. We got to work and figure out what you need to do every day so that you can take the action. I love nineties. To a goal. So that way you are just focusing on one thing for 90 days, that gives you enough time to make the action be consistent with it, because you can see the end of the tunnel.
You don't have to go, okay, I have to do this for a year, but you can say I'm going to focus on this thing for 90 days and maybe it's 30 days I'm currently in. I don't want to say a challenge. I have a goal for myself for the month of December. I personally am reaching out. Individually every day to my network, because I want to be speaking more in front of people face to face.
So I am doing this every day. Another goal I have is to just deepen my relationship with my top three girls. So every morning I am sending a quote or something special to my top three girls in a group text, and then the bottom half of my goal. So I have this divided on my camp. That's why I say bottom half the top half is my girls.
Bottom half is reaching out to one person and I write down the name of the person I reached out to it. And if I got a speaking gig out of it, I highlight them. So I am just taking massive action every day. I'm doing it and I'm doing it for 30 days and then I'm going to reevaluate and see if it was working.
See if anything improved with relationships. See if I got speaking gigs out of it, I can already tell. It's working, it's still working. So you have to take the action plan, figure out your goal, plan it out, work it backwards, and then take the action. Number nine, I am a woman of faith, prayer, and my spiritual walk is very important to me, but I also meditate and they are two separate things and I am a huge believer in visualizing what you want, how it feels.
Inside how it feels in the room or in the energy around you, how it feels with the people that you are around and really being so vividly clear on what that feels like when you hit your goal. And when you can visualize that down to what the room is and what you're wearing, it's mindless. When it happens, it's just so cool.
Adding meditation into my morning practice has been lovely. And I just, I don't miss it now because I don't miss a morning because it is so effective. And then taking that time, you all know if you've been around here any like the time, how important my morning walk is, and that is my prayer time and my time just to be grounded.
And listening to what's around me. So pray and meditate. I right ladies, I said 10, but we are going to stop at nine because number 10 is my absolute favorite to do, and that will be next week's episode. So here we recap, we're going to recap what we learned today. Number one, get it all out, get out everything that would be really cool or really awesome or amazing to do.
And make sure you incorporate all aspects of your life. Number two, what's off or on your table. What do you need to let go of and what is a non-negotiable hard? Yes. That you have to do. Number three, what's it all worth? What are the financials behind what you need to get done and start to plan on those numbers.
Figuring out that budget. Number four, look back to move forward. What worked in 2020? What didn't work and carry that forward into 2021. Number five plan. Out. This is a big one taking the time to write it out and figure out those daily activities to make your goals happen. Number six, what are you going to wear?
How are you going to show up emotionally, physically, and mentally to make this all happen? Number seven, who's your accountability tribe. Are they your bestie? Is it a mastermind who is going to hold you accountable? Or is it a business coach? Let's do this. Take the massive action and that massive action.
Everybody is the daily steps every day, the daily little actions every day to make sure you're hitting your goal and number nine, pray and meditate and listen to what's around you. It's already there. The pieces are already there. You just have to see them and hear them, and then get super clear on that vision of what it feels like inside and all around you.
Get super clear on that vision so that you can carry that energy forward and make everything happen.
